A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A ROSE

Much like the crops grown here in the Midwest, flowers too take time to grow and eventually be harvested. Here is a little story about the life of a rose.

Once a rose plant is of the correct age and size,  it usually takes 6-8 months to flower and will produce flowers for approximately 9 years. These plants are truly nurtured under very carefully monitored systems to produce the best flowers possible. There is a lot of pruning and trimming that happens at this stage which is all done by hand.

HARVESTING AT THE FARM

When the rose is ready it is cut by workers and graded by stem length and bud size. It is dipped in a cleaning solution that helps prevent bacteria from growing and to keep the flowers hydrated until they receive further care down the line.

Within 15 minutes after harvesting the workers will remove a few guard petals and the bottom 1/3 of  leaves. The final stem measurement and bud size is determined and the rose is bundled in bunches of 25 and wrapped in plastic and the bottom is secured with elastic bands and the roses are placed in a hydrating solution for 6-24 hours. This solution contains bacteria killing agents as well as hydrating agents to keep the roses as fresh as possible. They are then put in a cold room which is kept at 34 degrees until shipping happens.

SHIPPING

The pre-chilled roses are boxed and loaded on to refrigerated trucks and taken to the airport, loaded on cargo planes going to Miami. Once in Miami the flowers are unloaded to a cold room where customs inspects them. They are then ready to be shipped within the USA.

Flowers are shipped by plane or refrigerated truck to wholesalers across the nation and then transported to your local flower shops. Extreme care and handling happens during this whole process and finishes with your local florist delivering the freshest products possible to you! From cut in the field to florist happens in about 4 days!

**A note about flowers in Miami International Airport: Approximately 30 cargo planes full of flowers enter through Miami alone each day! (410,000 tons a year) That’s just Miami, there are other airports across the country that also receive flowers from the European, Australian and Asian markets. **
